ABOUT THE REGATTA

More than 300 sailors exploring Toulon and its region.

The regatta will take place in Toulon from May 7th to 12th, 2024. This regatta will bring together around twenty 12 Metre yachts, a class that represented the pinnacle of yacht development for the highest levels of international sailing competition, from the Olympic Games (1908-1920) to the America's Cup (1958-1987). These yachts will be joined by other metric class yachts. They will be on display in the Old Dock of Toulon's port, on the Cronstadt quay between the town hall and the maritime prefecture, along with their 300 crew members, from Tuesday, May 7th to Sunday, May 12th. On Friday, May 10th, 2024, in the late afternoon, the yachts will move aside to allow the Olympic flame to pass through.

The sailboats will race for six days in Toulon's main harbor and will be visible from the Vignettes nautical stadium. Live coverage of the regatta, both at sea and from land, will be offered, as well as evenings with the crews. The sailboats will be open for visits by reservation. School groups and university students will participate in the event. On Saturday, May 11th, the public will enjoy introductory sailing sessions and nautical activities on the Mourillon beaches.

A world first in over 20 years!

The first stage of the 2024 French sailing cup, the regatta will pit 5 generations of 12mJI yachts from all parts of the world against each other for a week.

With a fleet the largest since the America's Cup Jubilee in Cowes in 2001, this regatta will feature extensive digital communication to share onboard footage of these legendary boats in idyllic settings with sailors and fans worldwide. On land, the celebrations will be on par with these large crews, each with around fifteen sailors involved in every maneuver. The clubs involved in the organization and the crews will collaborate to minimize the environmental impact, notably by sharing equipment, optimizing transportation, and reducing waste and water consumption.

Regarding the 12 mJI:

The 112-year-old International 12-meter class carries the living history of racing yacht design by the world's greatest naval architects, including Olin Stephens, Clinton Crane, William Fife III, Philip Rhodes, Johan Anker, Ben Lexcen and many others, who pushed their designs to the limits of innovation of their time.

The boats that resulted represented the pinnacle of yacht development from 1907 to 1987 for the highest levels of international sailing competition – from the Olympic Games (1908-1920) to the America's Cup (1958-1987).

12mJI does not refer to a hull length, but to the result of a mathematical formula obtained by taking several criteria into account. The overall length of a 12mJI is between 18 and 21 meters, with a displacement of approximately 30 tons.
